Tree Campus Higher Education
Illinois State University is honored to be recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education Institution since 2008. This Arbor Day Foundation program celebrates colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Here's how we accomplished it:
- Our students and community members use trees in service learning.
- We have a campus tree care plan.
- We invest in the trees in our arboretum.
- We celebrate trees every Arbor Day and in many events throughout the year.
- We have a tree advisory committee.
The Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with Toyota, has several programs that promote sustained, healthy community forests. Examples of other programs include Tree City USA, Tree Campus Healthcare, Tree Line USA and Community Tree Recovery.
As part of maintaining the Tree Campus Higher Education status, annual Arbor Day and Earth Day events are hosted in the Fell Arboretum. The Arboretum tree walks, planting demonstrations and community outreach programs are all related to this initiative.
Illinois State University is proud of this recognition by The Arbor Day Foundation as it affirms the mission of the Fell Arboretum.
Tree Advisory Committee
This committee is comprised of individuals including students, staff, and faculty across departments at Illinois State University; it also includes members of the community. The committee discusses ongoing projects and goals in the Fell Arboretum.
